Tackling Christmas Gift Buying
Christmas truly is a wonderful time of year. When planned well, it can be exactly the kind of celebration you want - whether that’s a lively gathering with family, a peaceful period of rest and reflection, or a well-deserved getaway. Maybe a mix?
Over the coming weeks, I’ll be sharing some simple tips to help make Christmas a little less stressful and a lot more enjoyable. Let’s start with one of the biggest festive tasks - gift buying.
Here are some things you can try to help make this an easier and more organised Christmas:
Set a Budget Early. Aim to set your Christmas budget by early autumn. Decide on an overall amount and then break it down by person or group. This helps you stay on track and avoid those last-minute spending splurges.
Write a Gift List. Jot down ideas for each person you’re buying for. Note where you’ll go searching for each gift - be it online, a local shop or making something handmade. Having a plan helps you save both time and money.
Start Handmade Gifts Early. If you’re making something yourself, give yourself plenty of time to enjoy the creative process without pressure. Handmade gifts are extra special - but only if they don’t leave you frazzled!
Spread the Cost. Consider buying a few gifts each month to spread the cost. Picking up items in October or November can also help you avoid delivery delays and the December rush.
Create a Gift Storage Space. Designate a cupboard, drawer or box to store all your gifts. It keeps everything organised and ensures your surprises don’t get discovered before Christmas morning!
Look Out for Offers. Keep an eye out for deals on wrapping paper, cards and ribbons. Stocking up early can save you money and time later on.
Plan for Deliveries and Postage. Some gifts may need to be posted or delivered. Check delivery times and allow extra days for festive delays. If you’ll be hand-delivering gifts, block out time in your calendar now, so it doesn’t become a last-minute scramble.
Don’t Forget Small Gifts. Stocking fillers, teacher gifts and tokens of appreciation for neighbours, gardeners and hairdressers can add up. Look for mulitpack offers or small, thoughtful items you can buy ahead.
Organise Your Wrapping Station. Gift wrapping can be messy - but with a little organisation, it doesn’t have to be! Keep paper, tape, tags and scissors in one place. Wrap gifts in batches and label as you go to stay on top of things.
Delegate and Share the Load. If you’re busy gift buying and wrapping, don’t try to do everything yourself. Ask family members to help with other household chores or errands so you can focus on what needs doing most. Christmas prep is a team effort.
A little planning now hopefully means you have time to relax and enjoy the magic of Christmas later. Hope these tips help. I am planning to get two more gifts this week, how about you?
